Hair Rejuvenation

Dr. Gupta is committed to applying current research to provide the best and safest modalities to retard and reverse early to moderate hair loss in men and women. To this goal, we are so excited to offer our patients one or both of the options below:

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections: Organic Treatment with “Liquid Gold”

SelphlPlatelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) is derived from the patient’s own blood serum. This therapy has been FDA approved and employed for over 30 years for advanced wound healing and joint restoration. Now, we are seeing exciting results with PRP treatment for hair growth!

PRP--Liquid Gold

Using the SELPHYL System, the patient’s blood is drawn and placed into a centrifuge to separate out the platelet rich plasma, the yellow part (called “liquid gold”). The PRP is activated with calcium chloride and then injected into the patient’s scalp. Over the ensuing few weeks, injected platelets spew out growth factors, which stimulate stem cells and other cells in the microenvironment of the hair follicle. Thus, sluggish or dormant hair follicles are stimulated into an active growth phase resulting in decreased hair loss, growth of terminal hairs, and overall improved quality, density, and luster of the existing hair.

Several studies have shown increased hair density at 4 months lasting for about 11 months. PRP injections can be performed once every 2 months for 3 sessions and then once every 6 to 12 months for maintenance. Each session takes 30 to 45 minutes and is well tolerated by patients without any need for local anesthetic or painkiller. In our practice, virtually 100% of patients report seeing a significant reduction of hair loss as early as 2 weeks after, 75% see new hair growth by 2 months, and over 90% have increased volume, shine, and fullness by 4 months.

Low Level Laser Treatment: Biomodulation

Illumiwave LaserIn our office, we have the IllumiWave 180 Pro-series laser because it has the greatest coverage area and highest quality multi-wavelength laser technology available today. It is FDA approved as a Class 3A “cold” laser, since it does not burn or damage the skin and stimulates the body’s mechanisms to repair and heal itself. This laser can also be used for wound healing and there are no reported side effects. The Illumiwave has 181 diodes which emit red beams of low level laser light at the 670 nm and 650 nm wavelengths to increase local blood flow and to stimulate hair follicles at the mitochondrial level. There is increased production of cellular energy (ATP) and proteins as a result of this stimulation. This burst of energy serves as “CPR” for inactive or dying cells and provides a nutritional boost to normal cells.

Thus, there is overall improved quality with thicker, shinier, denser and healthier hair in 84% of all patients treated. European studies have shown that by 3 months, LLLT stops hair loss in 85% of cases and by 6 months, stimulates new hair growth in 55% of cases. In US studies, 100% of men and women experienced stabilization of hair loss. Hair regrowth occurred in 75 – 96% of individuals studied, depending on gender and the location of hair loss. The degree of hair regrowth was around 25 – 40%. Upwards of 85% of patients will also see hair re-growth of terminal hairs. In our practice, more than 90% have stabilization of hair loss by 2 months, about 75% see new hair growth starting at 2 months after, and over 75% of patients enjoy thicker, fuller, shinier hair after 6 months.

Treatments are 20 to 30 minutes long and, depending on the patient, are scheduled regularly every 1-4 weeks for 6 months, followed by maintenance sessions. The session is painless and most patients read or nap throughout. This laser is safe for all skin and hair types and can be used for men and women. Unfortunately, it will not benefit patients who are completely bald and have no active follicles. Patients who use oral or topical agents for hair loss are encouraged to continue these throughout.

Combination Therapy with ILLUMIWAVE and PRP: Double Delight!

181 Laser Diodes2-Picture 137For the very motivated patient, we also offer combination therapy with low level laser therapy and PRP injections. We believe that the laser “preps” the scalp by stimulating the circulation and follicles which enable the platelets and growth factors to work to a heightened degree. We are currently conducting a clinical study to verify our empiric results.
